A New Jersey woman stabbed a man she met online during their first date this week, police said.

Zaniya P. Stevens, 23, of Newark was arrested Thursday after stabbing her date three times during an altercation at his apartment, police said.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Thursday when police were confronted by Stevens. The woman alerted police who arrived on the scene, authorities said.

Stevens told police that she stabbed the man in self-defense after he allegedly attempted to strangle her, authorities said.

After no evidence of strangling was found, police say they arrested Stevens.

Stevens will likely be charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.
