“Just the Tip of the Iceberg”

New Ben Garrison Cartoon, “Just the Tip of the Iceberg”

A sinister cartoon for a sinister story.

The Church has covered up decades of child molestation by priests across the state of Pennsylvania.

For far too long the Church has ignored or hidden a problem of epidemic proportions under their pulpits. Priest who weren’t arrested and jailed were merely shuffled off to different parishes, where they continued their vile ways of abuse.

Instead of telling someone they’re not a Christian if they have a gun in their house, it’s time for the Pope to clean his own house. He has the power to allow priests to marry and have families. It’s not only normal, but also Biblical.

Mom defends teacher who had sex with her daughter, 14!

(Laredo Morning Times) The mother of a middle school student who had a sexual relationship with a former United ISD teacher in 2015 testified on Wednesday at the man’s sentencing hearing, saying that he was “almost like a son” and that she did not want him to go to prison.

Luis Enrique Mercado, 36, pleaded guilty to indecency with a child by exposure, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Mercado was accused of committing a host of sexual offenses against a then-14-year-old student.

The Webb County District Attorney’s Office agreed to dismiss the remaining charges on Mercado’s 22-count grand jury indictment, including nine counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, five counts of improper relationship between an educator and a student, four counts of sexual assault of a child, two counts of possession of child pornography and one count of indecency with a child by exposure.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 25-year-old woman pleaded guilty to allowing two men to sexually assault her two daughters in exchange for cash.

The Office of the Fulton County District Attorney said Friday that the girls, ages 5 and 6, told their guardians that their mother, Morgan Summerlin, would take them to men’s homes to be molested and raped. The men would then pay them and Summerlin would take their money.

One of those men, 78-year-old Richard “Pop” Office, was found guilty on Tuesday of rape, child molestation, trafficking a person for sexual servitude, enticing a child for indecent purposes and sexual battery. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 146 additional years.

Summerlin also allowed Alfredo Trejo to abuse the girls in multiple and similar ways. Trejo was convicted of rape, sexual battery, child molestation and aggravated child molestation. He was sentenced to 25 years and life on probation.

The children’s grandmother, Teresa Davidson, also pleaded guilty to cruelty to children for failing to protect the girls after they told her they were being abused. She was sentenced to five years in prison.

Summerlin pleaded guilty to cruelty to children, trafficking a person for sexual servitude and enticing a child for indecent purposes. She will be sentenced on June 4.

‘Mom’ films herself molesting toddler daughter, sells videos for drug money: Prosecutor!

JEFFERSONVILLE — A 23-year-old woman accused of molesting and exploiting a child for drug money appeared in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 on Thursday.

A relative of the alleged victim, a child under the age of 5, called police after finding concerning videos on a phone belonging to Jamie L. Simms, according to court records. The videos, sent to five unidentified males on the messenger app Kik, reportedly show Simms either sexually abusing the child directly, or using sex toys on herself with the child present.

When Simms was arrested last week, she reportedly told police that she was addicted to drugs and communicated with people on apps Kik and Omegle and through Reddit, sending pornographic videos online for money. She estimated receiving $200 as payment for the videos, which she said she used to buy personal items and drugs.

Inside the courtroom Thursday morning, Simms kept her head down with her face in her hands as attorney Eric Weitzel — who presided over the hearing — read the following charges: one level 4 felony count of child molesting, two level 4 felony counts of child exploitation and one level 5 felony count of possession of child pornography.

At one point during the reading of the charges, Simms shook her head side to side. When Weitzel asked if she understood the charges against her, she said, “Yes, I understand, but” before Weitzel cut her off, advising she not speak without an attorney present.

A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf and a public defender will be appointed. Simms’ bond remains at $50,000 cash only. A trial is scheduled for Aug. 7. If convicted on all charges against her, Simms could face between seven and 42 years in prison.

Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull told the News and Tribune on Wednesday that the case remains under investigation. He called the case “unspeakably disturbing.”

“As of this moment she (Simms) is the only one charged. However that’s subject to change if I am able to establish criminal cases that I can prove against other individuals that were involved,” he said, adding that anyone believed to have received, requested or paid for the pornographic videos could be charged.

The father of the children suspected something was wrong and that is when he went through the mother’s phone. He told WAVE 3 News that when he found inappropriate videos she had recorded, he immediately called police. The details in the probable cause affidavit are disturbing and too graphic to share.

“I feel sick, I felt sick since I found out,” said the father, who wanted to have his identity withheld.

According to court documents, Jaime Simms was visiting the 3- and 1-year-old she shares with the father just last week.

“She was only here a couple hours a week to see her kids,” the father said.

He went through Simms’ phone and found videos of her and their 3-year-old daughter.

“It’s a case where a 3-year-old who was asleep was taken advantage of by an adult,” Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said. “In this particular case, the allegation is that the defendant filmed the child abuse/child molestation that was occurring and then did distribute the video of that molestation on apps or websites that included Kik, Reddit and a something known as Omegle.”

Simms confessed to police and told them she recorded the videos to sell so she could get money for her drug habit.

“These are sites where people can exchange or post videos,” Mull said. “In this particular instance, she was receiving money that she had set up to a PayPal account.”

Simms told police that she estimated she received approximately $200 from the videos, and she used the money to buy personal items and drugs. Simms is facing child molestation and child porn charges. If convicted, she will have to register as a sex offender.

As for the 3-year-old?

“She doesn’t know anything that happened,” the father said. “But, she has been asking, Where is mommy? I don’t know what to say to her.”

The father said his daughter is OK. Authorities are reviewing evidence to see if there will be additional charges or if there are other victims.

Mull said the case is just another one where people will do terrible things to get drugs.

Molester who claimed 5-year-old girl ‘begged’ for sex act can’t beat his prison term!

9EC0AD5F-CD0A-4BD5-9B55-B4E59DAA3527

A Pennsylvania man who claimed a 5-year-old girl begged him for a sex act has failed to convince a state appeals court his prison term is too long.

Instead, the Superior Court panel found the 15- to 30-year jail sentence fits Brigham Lawless’ crime just fine.

Lawless, 47, of Cresco, didn’t challenge his convictions for sexually assaulting the child while making another 5-year-old watch in December 2015. He pleaded guilty to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child.

Lawless only contested the severity of the punishment imposed by Monroe County President Judge Margherita Patti Worthington.

The state court disposed of Lawless’ appeal in an opinion by Judge Jack A. Panella.

Panella called Lawless’ appeal contradictory and confused. He noted the penalty Worthington chose is right in the standard sentencing range for such child-sex crimes.

To overturn his sentence, Lawless would have to prove it was unreasonable, Panella noted.

“That is simply not the case here,” he wrote. “Lawless had (the girl) perform oral sex on him while (the other child) watched. And he claimed she ‘begged’ him to do that.”
