White teacher fired for making black students re-enact slavery scenes

Patricia Cummings

A white city teacher who forced black students to lie on the floor while she stood on their backs as part of a grotesque lesson on slavery was given the boot, the Department of Education said Friday.

Patricia Cummings humiliated the MS 118 students to illustrate conditions faced by African slaves, several kids from the class complained.

The DOE reassigned Cummings — who claimed she had no malicious intent — before firing her outright after an investigation, according to DOE spokesman Doug Cohen.

“Ms. Cummings was terminated based on the results of this investigation and a review of her overall performance as an educator,” Cohen said.

The probe found that she used poor judgment but did not substantiate a corporal punishment rap.

Cummings — who denied trampling students’ backs — has filed a notice of claim against the city and contends that she is the victim of reverse discrimination.

We are not going to let them ruin our client’s life and career,” said her attorney, Tom Liotti.
