How metal from cremated bodies is being sold off… and recycled into road signs and aircraft engines

  • Dutch company OrthoMetals, behind the recycling, says half Britain’s 260 crematoriums have signed up to scheme
  • Generates 75 tons of metal a year
  • Money made from steel hips, plates and screws goes to charity

Metal body parts from the dead are being recycled into road signs, car parts and  aircraft engines.

Steel hips, plates and screws used in legs and skulls are collected after cremation and sold on – with money raised going to charity.

Even metal plates from false teeth and old fillings are recovered and re-used, together with metal fittings on coffins.

High-value metals that survive the 1,000-degree furnace are sold for use in the automobile and aeronautical industries.

article-2307737-193B9834000005DC-98_638x415OrthoMetals, the Dutch company behind the recycling, says around half Britain’s 260 crematoriums have signed up to the scheme, which is generating 75 tons of metal a year

Cheap metals are smelted down and sold for general use – including road signs, motorway barriers and lamp posts. High-value metals, such as cobalt, which are found in some implants and dental work, are used in aircraft engines

These include cobalt and titanium, which are found in some implants and dental work, with the former used in aircraft engines.

Other, less-valuable metals are smelted down and sold for more general use – including road signs, motorway barriers and  lamp posts.

Money made is donated to charity and almost £1million has been raised for good causes since the project began in Britain in 2004.

OrthoMetals, the Dutch company behind the recycling, says around half Britain’s 260 crematoriums have signed up to the scheme, which is generating 75 tons of metal a year.

Before cremations, relatives are asked if they want to keep metal parts of loved ones.

The vast majority say they have no need for them and sign a consent form agreeing to the recycling.

When the cremation is over, the ashes and other remaining items go into a compartment in the cremator and then into a special cremulator machine which separates any metal from remaining pieces of bone.

High-value metals that survive the 1,000-degree furnace (above) are sold for use in the automobile and aeronautical industries

The metal is then loaded into large bins and taken away. At those crematoriums not signed up to the scheme, metal body parts are buried in the grounds, but new legislation means this will no longer be possible.

Ruud Verberne, owner of OrthoMetals, said: ‘Metals reclaimed from cremations are being increasingly re-used. High-value metals such as cobalt go into the aircraft or automotive industries.

‘Others are sold to smelters and foundries and it is possible that they end up as road signs or motorway barriers – there’s no way of knowing.

‘What is important is that the metals are being recycled, and this is a growing business both in Britain and elsewhere in Europe.’

One of the crematoriums in the scheme, at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, says it fills one large bin a month with the unwanted metal body parts.

The recycling schemes are governed by strict criteria set down by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

And it may not only be metal from medical procedures that can be recovered from the deceased.

In October last year, the family of a war veteran were amazed when they were handed his ashes containing almost 1lb of shrapnel.

Ronald Brown, who died aged 94, had stepped on a landmine while serving in northern France during the Second World War.

The explosion filled his left leg with shards of metal and he was forced to crawl two miles to safety.

The shrapnel was left in his body because the primitive medical facilities on the battlefield meant it was safer not to remove it. Mr Brown told his children there was ‘a bullet’ in his leg.

His daughter Jane Madden said: ‘When we went to scatter his ashes, we asked whether the bullet had been found and they gave us this bag full of metal.’

More People Sickened By Parasite In Outbreak Linked To McDonald’s Salads

iu

More illnesses have been reported across the United States in two separate cyclospora outbreaks, federal health officials said Thursday.

In less than a week, the number of cases of reported illness from eating McDonald’s salads rose from 61 to 163.

The US Food and Drug Administration announced the latest count on Thursday: 163 people in 10 states, which includes three hospitalizations and no deaths. The FDA is working with McDonald’s to identify the salad ingredients making people sick and to trace them through the supply chain.

As a precaution, McDonald’s has stopped selling the salads in 3,000 fast food restaurants in 14 states to try to contain the outbreak, the FDA said. The states are Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Kentucky, West Virginia and Missouri.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 237 cases of cyclosporiasis in people who reportedly consumed Del Monte Fresh vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and dill dip. The reports came from four states, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. Seven people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported.

A recall was issued on June 15 of 6-ounce, 12-ounce and 28-ounce trays containing those items in clear, plastic clamshell packaging. Trays have a “Best if used by” date of June 17, 2018 and were sold at Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond’s, Sentry, Potash, Meehan’s, Country Market, FoodMax Supermarket, and Peapod stores in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

Health officials said there was no evidence to suggest that the cluster of illnesses linked to McDonald’s salads is related to the ongoing cyclospora outbreak linked to Del Monte Fresh vegetable trays.

The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness as a result of consuming contaminated food or water.

The symptoms, which can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite, include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those infected can experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.

The illness can last from a few days to a few months and patients might feel better, then get worse again. Patients can be treated with antibiotics.

DOCTOR AT NEW YORK CITY HOSPITAL SUSPENDED FOR ALLEGED WHITE SUPREMACY VIEWS AND AFFILIATIONS

Dov

A radiologist at a hospital in New York City is on suspension amid allegations that he is a white supremacist. The claims first surfaced in a now-deleted post on Medium shared by anti-fascists in New York.

The article accused Dr. Dov Bechhofer, 27, of being friends with white supremacist authors on social media, writing racist and xenophobic comments on the far-right website Counter-Currents, and running a Facebook page for a eugenics conference attended by neo-Nazis.

Bechhofer is a resident radiologist at the Montefiore Medical Center’s Moses Campus in the Bronx. He told The Gothamist he could not discuss the allegations. He did not reply to a request by Newsweek for comment.

“As soon as we learned of the Medium.com article, the employee was placed off duty pending the results of a thorough investigation,” a spokeswoman for Montefiore told Newsweek in an emailed statement.

“The views expressed in the article are in no way reflective of Montefiore, our mission, how we conduct ourselves, or the care we deliver each day.

“Montefiore was founded on our commitment to healthcare as a basic human right, and we deliver the highest level of care to everyone who comes through our doors, regardless of social or economic status, ethnicity, race or religion.

“Having all backgrounds, beliefs and diversity embodied in our patients, employees and neighbors is intrinsic to who we are, and allows us to thrive as an institution.”

Among the comments attributed to Bechhofer was: “Do I despise Blacks like [Colin] Kaepernick for milking the White cow despite the fact that he, his race, and all others are already in such objective debt to Whites? Absolutely.”

Another read: “The West has no use for [Muslims], and they’ll be just fine when they go home.”

He also allegedly called for armed militias on the southern border “with orders to shoot illegals.”

There are expressions of support for a white ethnostate: “I’ve written in previous comments that in White ethnostates (which I hope to see materialize ASAP)…Garden-variety ‘conservatives’ need to be made to understand that the age of racial neutrality is over.”

The author of the Medium article, whose identity is unknown, lays out how they connected Bechhofer to the comments made by a user called “Dov.” They draw on similarities between Bechhofer’s Facebook page and comments made by “Dov” about what he likes, who he associates with, and the work he does.

They also believe “Dov” is Jewish—as is Bechhofer, reportedly the son of a rabbi—despite making a number of anti-Semitic comments.

“I’ve had it in my head to write a little something called ‘A Jewish Defense of Anti-Semitism,’ but it’s been slipping my mind,” the user “Dov” once wrote.

“In short, the vocal majority of Jews act so irritatingly and display such reprehensible attitudes — publicly and privately — that I’d rather see a ‘tempered’ anti-Semitism now than see Jewish perfidy continue without consequence until, as Johnny Cash might say, the man comes around. Because he will.

“As I frequently tell Jewish acquaintances, if there is another Holocaust, it will be entirely of their doing (I don’t get too into the genesis of the first one… I once tried, but mouths fell open and I was practically kicked out of the apartment).”

Update:

An email address listed as belonging to Dov Bechhofer in the Medium post replied to a request for a statement, purporting to be from the doctor, sent to Newsweek at 11:16 a.m. on July 26. The statement is reproduced in full below:

“I am ashamed of the hurtful, unjustifiable words that I posted online that showed callous disregard toward certain minority groups and am deeply sorry for these transgressions.

“The posts do not reflect how I was raised or how I actually treat others. I will continue to struggle to understand what brought me to write them. In short, it started with scared curiosity about what was being said on these forums about Jews. But after spending some time in this toxic corner of the Internet, I eventually became numb to the ugliness of that hateful echo chamber and began participating in the dialogue.

“I am filled with remorse and take full responsibility for my actions, which will long be an embarrassment to my family, friends, colleagues, and community.

“Today, I’m at the beginning of a process to make amends for my behavior and am committed to working on my personal flaws. I am actively seeking long-term professional help to deal with these issues, which must be confronted honestly and completely.

“I denounce all forms of bigotry and violence directed at any ethnic, racial or religious group as well as those who are targeted for their sexual orientation.

“While I have much soul-searching and work to do on myself, I intend to take actions for the rest of my life that promote the dignity of all humanity.”

Teen sets up date on Instagram and then robs man at gunpoint!

A teenage girl lured a man she met on Instagram to a parking lot in Georgia — where he thought they were meeting for a date — and robbed him at gunpoint, police said.

Maquwell Fleming, 17, of Kennesaw, was arrested on July 17 hours after she allegedly held up the 18-year-old man at a Walmart parking lot in Marietta, WSB-TV reports.

“She hops out of a Dodge Dart, gets in the back of the vehicle, points a gun at him [and] robs him of the $160 that he had just been paid from his job,” Cobb County police Sgt. Sarah O’Hara told the station.

Determined to get his money back, the victim then drove after Fleming, following her onto Interstate 575 and later onto State Route 92 in Woodstock, where a Cherokee County coroner spotted the speeding cars and called police.

The coroner followed the cars and the victim later stopped driving to speak with police, O’Hara said.

“He stated that he had just been robbed by somebody that he thought he was supposed to be going on a date with,” she told the station.

The man gave police Fleming’s license plate number, which was put out in an alert to authorities. Cops in Kennesaw later tracked down the car, but Fleming wasn’t inside.

“It was not the suspect that they were looking for, but in fact, it was her mother,” O’Hara said.

The suspect’s mother then cooperated with investigators by leading them to her daughter. She later opened her apartment door and called for her two daughters to “come outside,” according to a police report obtained by the station.

The mom told police she had no idea about her daughter’s alleged plan, O’Hara said.

Fleming remained in custody on a felony charge of armed robbery at the Cobb County Jail without bond as of Thursday, jail records show. No attorney information was listed.

DEMI LOVATO OD WAS LIFE AND DEATH

0726-demi-lovato-getty06-3Demi Lovato could have died Tuesday from her overdose — it was that serious — sources connected to the singer tell TMZ.

We’re told the 911 call did not come a minute too soon, because Demi was in dire straits. “She could have died,” said a source with firsthand knowledge. Demi was unconscious when she was discovered at around 11:30 AM and the 911 call was placed.

TMZ broke the story … Demi received Narcan to counter the effects of opioids. As we reported, Demi and those who were at the house refused to disclose the drug or drugs that caused her to OD.

TMZ obtained the 911 call … in which the person at Demi’s home asked the dispatcher if the emergency vehicles could come without sirens — presumably because they wanted to keep the OD on the down-low. The dispatcher informed the caller the sirens would stay on.

Demi remains hospitalized. We’re told those around her want her to enter a rehab facilitywhen she’s released, but ultimately the decision is squarely hers.
